Hello Holy Family from Japan!

[Note: This post is written by Brandon Jean, former Coordinator of Youth Ministry, currently teaching English in Japan.]

I have arrived safely and I am starting to get settled in. I have been working at my schools already but I don't start teaching classes until September. I have already found a parish here and have been joining the locals for Sunday Mass. I purchased a book with the text of the Mass in 6 languages, including Japanese, romanized Japanese, and English, so I can participate too!

Excuse me Sir!

“Excuse me Sir, your dog just peed on my lawn!”

I stood there waiting as the large man walking the offending lap-dog turned around to face me four square.  Being smaller than he, I puffed out my chest for effect and braced myself for a confrontation.

War Scars

Through bath time adventures, my son Spencer (who is 18 months) has learned to hold his breath when water surrounds him (well, at times). A survival skill amongst many that children learn (and parents are happy they do).

A Journey Through the Sacraments!

We just completed our Vacation Bible School (VBS) for this year. This past week, 70 children took over the church every morning for music, crafts, snacks, games, and discussion, all to learn more about the seven sacraments. It was a blast!

The Ultimate Ending

Have you ever envisioned your own funeral?  What do want people say about you once you’re gone?  Your spouse?  Your children?  Your co-workers?  Your friends?

The second habit of highly effective people is to “Begin with the End in Mind”.

From the Mouths of Babes...

My son Lachlan called my wife “Babe” the other day!

Tanya had expressed some frustration over something or other and little Lachlan asked, “What’s the matter Babe?”  I was in the living room, Tanya was in the kitchen and we both burst out laughing.

I’ve always wanted to have a ‘life-style’.

I’m not 100% certain I even know what a life-style is, but from time to time I think I may stumble into one only to find that I’ve stumbled back out of it a short time later.

Before Tanya and I had kids, I think we had a modicum of a life-style.  We certainly had more available income.  Our satellite package had quite a few more channels in it than it does now.  We ate out more often (and not just at McDonald’s thank you very much!) and we enjoyed date nights regularly.  Getting away from the pressures of life simply meant not focussing on our work.

Highly Effective Church

Stephen Covey is one of my favourite authors.  I enjoy his work so much that I will be ordering a copy of his infamous “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” for each of our parish staff.
