Blessed are the Cheese Makers?

Written by  Jim Nakoneshny

You may have seen the old Monty Python movie "Life of Brian." It follows the misadventures of a hapless Jewish peasant as he keeps inadvertently crossing paths with the followers of an increasingly popular Jesus of Nazareth. One early scene in the movie shows a crowd gathered far into the distance as the Sermon on the Mount is being delivered. Over the noise of the crowd one of the people near the back asks the others what the Nazarene just said.

"I think it was 'Blessed are the Cheese Makers'" a fellow replies. Helpfully, another clarifies: "Well obviously it's not meant to be taken literally. It refers to any manufacturers of dairy products."

Naturally, this scene is played out only for comic effect. It’s easy for us to shake our heads at their obvious lack of understanding, but in reality I wonder how many of us too have built our religious framework on equally tenuous foundations? Do we truly understand what the Lord is trying to tell us?

Luckily for us, the Catholic Church has a long and rich tradition of writers who are able to unpack its various nuggets of wisdom and re-form them into information which is more easily understandable. Of course we know that this material is out there, but who has the time to try and track it all down?

That’s where we can help. We’ve recently added two new learning resources here at the Cathedral for you to access at your convenience.
