It's All Garbage!

Written by

What do you fill yourself with?

I adore chocolate. Massive bowls of macaroni and cheese are amazing. Poutine is simply lovely. That being said, I know that I really should eat better. This just isn’t healthy, and as they say, “Garbage in, garbage out.”

So on the food side of things, I know I’m eating garbage. (Tasty, tasty garbage.) But beyond the physical, what else am I filling myself with? PODCASTS! I think I started listening online to CBC’s Quirks and Quarks online back before podcasting existed. Then I dove into the and Revision3 networks when they emerged, and I just never stopped. My tastes and hobbies have changed over the years, but I find listening to podcasts a great mix of relaxation, information, and entertainment.

There’s so much great material out there, enough to easily satisfy anyone’s tastes. Here are some of the ones I like that feed my spirit, mind, and tummy:

  • The Catholic Guy Show Podcast. This is usually a “best of the week” from the Catholic Guy Show on SiriusXM. Our family loves listening to it. The host (Lino Rulli), co-hosts (Fr Jim Chern and Mark Hart “the Bible Geek”), and producer (Tyler, aka “the muppet”) are hilarious. My kids can’t get enough of Tyler. Because bears are fast.
  • Thinking Faith. Discussion from (Deacon) Eric and (Dr.) Brett from Regina, often dealing with some pastoral or theological topic.
  • The Coaster. Lance, Daniel, Alicia, and guests. They’re Canadian, Catholic, and like to chat with a beverage in hand. Because all great conversations happen around a coaster.
  • The Chimney. Highlights from Catholic people on social media, about twice a week. It’s short (5 minutes), sweet, and entertaining.
  • The Catholic Hipster. Tommy is “The Catholic Hipster,” and Sarah is “The Catholic Drinkie.” They both love burgers. I don’t know what else to say. They’re just awesome.
  • Quirks and Quarks. It’s the national science program from CBC Radio. It’s been going for decades. I've been listening since at least 2003. It’s still great.
  • Star Wars Minute. Have you ever wanted to listen to a couple nerds talk about the Star Wars movies, one minute at a time? Yes, each and every single minute of each and every movie. I didn’t think I did, but I was so wrong!!! They’ve made it through Ep 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, & 3, and they should start discussing Episode 7 (The Force Awakens) any week now. I’m so excited.
  • Brewing. I love homebrewing beer. There are a bunch of podcasts I enjoy. Brülosophy, Basic Brewing, and Experimental Brewing would be at the top of the list.
  • And it's not a podcast, but I get all the best Catholic news from the Eye of the Tiber.

There’s a few others too, but… they probably fit that “garbage” description I’m trying to avoid, so I think they’ll remain my little secret.

Oh, and my kids have recently started listening to Short and Curly. They love it.

If you’ve never tried listening to podcasts, why not try one? A number of these will let you listen online, or you can subscribe to them with a podcast client on a phone or computer. I mostly keep them on my phone, and play one while commuting, cooking, cleaning, or even just little bits here and there throughout the day.

So, what do you fill yourself with? Is it satisfying? Or is time to find something a little more nourishing?

Any podcasts you love? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook.
